Wet Walls & Wet Rooms Glasgow

At Builders Glasgow we have seen a sizeable increase in the demand for the installation of wetrooms in both existing and new build properties, with customers looking for sleek, minimalist look for their bathroom. A wetroom differs from a traditional bathroom in that it is waterproofed to prevent leaks so removes the need for conventional shower trays and does away with the bathtub to provide a modern, spacious bathroom.

Converting a “normal” bathroom into a wetroom offers a number of benefits:

  • Space – removing a bath and/or shower tray frees up a large amount of space, making even the smallest bathroom feel more spacious.
  • Practicality – for older people or those with impaired mobility, a wetroom makes showering so much easier and more accessible.
  • Easy to clean – with no bathroom and shower tray/enclosure to clean, cleaning the bathroom becomes much less labour intensive.
  • Style – a wetroom’s minimalist design confers a clean, streamlined & modern look that is very much on trend.
  • Value – the desirability of a wetroom with homebuyers means that having one fitted can increase the value & saleability of your property.
  • Protection – the tanking/waterproofing technology used in our wetrooms means that, despite what you may assume, your home is better protected from water leaks.

Thanks to our years of experience fitting wet rooms (and converting existing bathrooms into wet rooms) Builders Glasgow has the specialist knowledge and skills required to deliver a quality wet-room installation. One that is carried out professionally to ensure that it is fully waterproof, finished to a high standard and will give years of reliable service. We specialise in a number of areas such as new kitchens & house extensions. We can make your wetroom concept a reality.

Wetroom installation requires the capabilities that only a professional construction company can provide to ensure that the floor has the precise gradient needed to drain the water away properly, the floor and walls have been correctly tanked to ensure lasting protection from water ingress and all plumbing, gas and electrical works have been carried out in accordance with Scottish building regulations to ensure both functionality and safety. Fitting a wetroom is a highly-specialised task not suited to do-it-yourself or underqualified handymen-type installers, especially if you want to achieve a safe, leak free wetroom that is finished to a high standard.

As a company operating in the home improvement sector, we have heard from many people who have been let down by other firms’ lack of professionalism during wetroom conversions – firms failing to start (and thus finish) on the date agreed, walking off jobs midway with no explanation or leaving work unfinished in order to attend other sites. Such unacceptable behaviour causes considerable inconvenience to homeowners, particularly where a bathroom is left in an unusable state.

At Builders Glasgow we believe not only in quality workmanship but also in treating our customers with respect by keeping to agreed dates and schedules (as far as possible) and communicating openly with you so there are no unwelcome “surprises”.

A wetroom is a significant investment in your home so you require the services of a wetroom company that can maximise your return on that investment by installing to the highest of standards. Builders Glasgow is that company.

Turning a bathroom into a wetroom

The exact process of taking an existing, traditional bathroom and converting it into a wetroom will vary (to some degree) according to the nature of the specific job being undertaken but the on-site process will follow a pattern similar to that outlined below:
  • Remove existing tiling from walls & floor then dispose
  • Disconnect, remove then dispose of old bathroom suite
  • Lift floor boards & fit angled platform for base.
  • Replace drainage, plumbing & electrics to suit wetroom
  • Prime walls and floor
  • Fit wetroom base then restore the floor to level.
  • Seal all gaps to prevent water leaks
  • Waterproof & tank the area & fit gasket
  • Paint ceiling
  • Fit underfloor heating (if purchased)
  • Tile walls & floor
  • Fit WC, basin & shower & seal
  • Fit screen (if purchased)
  • Clean installation
  • Final pre-handover check of functionality & finishing

Glasgow Wetrooms FAQ

Here is a selection of the most common questions that are put to us by potential customers regarding our garage conversions in Glasgow:
A wet room is a minimalist style of bathroom that dispenses with a traditional bathtub or raised shower tray & enclosure. It has a flat tiled floor throughout with a slight gradient to allow the water to drain away from the walk-in shower area and is waterproofed at the floor & walls using a special tanking membrane to prevent water from escaping.
It is not possible (or realistic) to provide wetroom quotes online or over the phone. An accurate quote can only ever be given when it is based on a home visit, survey and discussion of your design ideas, personal needs and desired materials/finishes. Prices can range from £5000-15,000 depending on the work involved.

Generally speaking, yes. Wetrooms can be installed in upstairs bathrooms, as en suites; anywhere you could have a conventional bathroom should allow for the installation of a wetroom, provided that the room is properly tanked to prevent water leaks.

Correct surface preparation, platform/base/floor installation, priming and tanking of the floors and walls using appropriate technologies designed specifically for wetrooms should ensure that there are no leaks into other parts of your property from the wetroom area. Our professional installers follow rigorous procedures to ensure that this is done correctly on all of our wetroom projects.
Yes. Builders Glasgow can fit wetrooms in properties with either wooden or concrete floors using a variety of wetroom products and construction techniques designed to enable installation into differing floor types.

There is a wide variety of materials that can be used for surfacing a wetroom. Personally we would recommend porcelain or ceramic tiles over natural stone tiles as these are porous so require annual re-sealing to keep the water out. Alternative options are concrete to achieve an industrial look or a range of wet-wall sheet type products including Corian. On a wetroom floor it is possible to fit vinyl flooring but we would recommend floor tiles both to give both longevity and better aesthetics in a home setting.

No. The floor of the shower area is designed to direct excess water down the drain, underfloor heating (if chosen) will dry up the floor rapidly and tile manufacturers now offer floor tiles specifically for wet room floors that provide improved grip & safety.
As a wetroom is also generally in use as a family bathroom you want the floor to be dry as soon as possible after your shower so it can be safely used by others. One recommendation is that you keep a squeegee-type mop in the wetroom and use it to direct any excess water into the shower area to drain away. Another recommendation is that you opt for underfloor heating in your wetroom (we can fit this) which both heats your room and dries out the floor quickly. It also means that you have no need of a bathroom radiator to spoil the minimalist look of your wet-room.
We can design, supply & fit wet rooms that are suited to the loads created by a wheelchair but please advise us of such requirements during your initial call/home visit as not all wet-room products are designed to service such needs.
